Screenings at Special Pavilion in Rio de Janeiro

July 17, 2014

Parque da Pola, an area created in Rio de Janeiro for viewing the FIFA World Cup finals, is home both to the official FIFA media center and the Japan Omotenashi Pavilion. The Japan Omotenashi Pavilion will be holding screenings of a program of films from the Japan Media Arts Festival, “Beyond the Technology: Technology for Depicting Emotions, Expressing the Present”.

The screenings, which form part of the “Japan Presentation Project”, will take place at the Parque da Bola site developed for football fans, Rio residents, and the international media.

The “Japan Presentation Project” was created to tell the world about “Cool Japan” in the lead up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. It is a project for the Government of Japan and the Japanese private sector to showcase Japanese culture and Japanese products and services at internationally conspicuous venues and occasions, and also to foster overseas business opportunities for Japanese firms. The Japan Omotenashi Pavilion is first undertaking under this “Japan Presentation Project”. Next year will mark the 120th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brazil. The Pavilion is drawing attention to what makes Japan so special from a range of different angles by highlighting Japanese culture and technology, and by giving visitors a taste of omotenashi or Japanese-style hospitality.

Program: “Beyond the Technology: Technology for Depicting Emotions, Expressing the Present”
*One Screening Daily
Digital technologies are constantly evolving and making us aware of what they can offer in terms of a rich diversity of expression. The digitization of the tools of expression is not only adding new allure to computer graphics and computer-generated simulations, but also to other existing techniques and new ones that combine digital and analogue. “Beyond the Technology” is able to direct our attention to the range of technologies used for expression and to the present possibilities for further diversity. In doing so, we are made aware that the depiction of emotions above and beyond technology is at the root of expression. This program reminds us of the rich expansion of the techniques for expression and portrays the sensibility of the artists and the pervading imaginative talent of the present.
